Demystifying the SRH (Segment Routing Header)

📖 Inside the Packet: Demystifying the Segment Routing Header (SRH)

To truly understand the power of network programmability, you have to look directly at the packet structure.

In a standard IPv6 packet, the Extension Header can house an SRH (Segment Routing Header). This field functions as a programmatic "instruction booklet" carried by the packet itself.

The SRH contains three critical variables:

1️⃣ Segment List: An array of IPv6 addresses (SIDs) representing the explicit hops, service functions, or virtual interfaces the packet must traverse.

2️⃣ Segments Left: An active pointer indicating which routing instruction needs to be executed next by the current network node.

3️⃣ HMAC TLV: Optional cryptographic parameters to authenticate the routing path and secure the packet against malicious injection.

By masterfully optimizing the SRH layout using uSID compression, SRv6 Tek Innovations strips away network complexity, allowing your routers to read instructions at line rate without introducing CPU overhead.
